A permanent magnet is a permanently magnetized ferromagnetic material with two magnetic poles: north pole (N) and south pole (S).
- Lines of magnetic force leave the magnet at the north pole and enter the magnet at the south pole. Inside the magnet, they go from the south pole to the north pole.
- These lines of force create a field around the magnet, which is called magnetic field of the magnet.
- Permanent magnets are used in a class of electric machines called permanent-magnet machines.
