As shown in the figure below, part of the flux generated by a current-carrying coil wrapped around a leg of a magnetic core stays outside the core. This flux is called leakage flux. As a result of flux leakage, a larger mmf is required to establish a specific magnetic flux in a core, compared with the ideal case where no flux leakage exists.
