In DC machines, the field is where excitation is placed (stator) and armature is where emf is induced (rotor).
Armature Connection Classification
There are two connection styles of DC machines based on the number of parallel paths that exist between the machine terminals.
- Lap Winding: parallel paths in the armature winding between the DC machine terminals, where is the number of poles on the field or stator. This connection style is used in high-current applications. Note that the current rating of the machine will be times that of the conductors used for armature winding
- Wave Winding: Two parallel paths in the armature winding between the DC machine terminals. This connection style is normally used in high-voltage applications, where a large number of coils of wire are connected in series in each of the two parallel paths. Note that the voltage rating of the machine will be the number of series coils in each path times the voltage rating of each coil.
