An interesting and important problem associated with submerged or floating bodies is concerned with the stability of the bodies. As illustrated by the figure in the margin, a body is said to be in a stable equilibrium position if, when displaced, it returns to its equilibrium position. Conversely, it is in an unstable equilibrium position if, when displaced 1even slightly2, it moves to a new equilibrium position.
