Compressors and Pumps

Compressors use work input to increase the pressure of a gas.

Pumps use work input to increase the pressure of a liquid.

Typically:

• Negligible heat transfer unless there is intentional cooling ($\dot{Q}\approx 0$)
• Potential and kinetic energy are negligible compared to changes in enthalpy
  • $\Delta \text{PE}\approx 0$
  • $\Delta \text{KE}\approx 0$
