Diagonalizable matrix
?
A square matrix is called diagonalizable if there exists a diagonal matrix and an invertible matrix such that .
The columns of are given by independent eigenvectors and , while the diagonal values of are the corresponding eigenvalues:
+++
Steps to diagonalize:
- Find eigenvalues of the matrix by solving the characteristic equation .
- Find the basis of consisting of eigenvectors of the matrix.
- Construct the matrices and .
- The matrix has the eigenvalues of as entries on the diagonal.
- The columns of are the corresponding eigenvectors. Note that the columns should match.
The diagonalization of a matrix is unique up to the permutations of the order of the eigenvalues.
Powers with diagonalization
One benefit of diagonalizing a matrix is it lets us find the power of a matrix easily. For example:
In general:
and since is diagonal, is easy to obtain.
